Central Park – A Knee Jerk Reaction To

Recently Apple reminded me that I still have an Apple+ subscription with a press release about Central Park. It is the latest animated musical comedy created, written and executive produced by Emmy Award winner Loren Bouchard (“Bob’s Burgers”), alongside Grammy Award winner Josh Gad (“Frozen”) and Emmy Award winner Nora Smith (“Bob’s Burgers”).

If Central Park was a superhero, its origin story would be a kid from New York that is hyped up on coffee and sugar and really loves Hamilton who, one day, got bitten by a radioactive Bob’s Burger.

However, unlike Peter Parker, Central Park feels distant and unrelatable.

What I mean is it is so American with its pacing, so New York with its setting, and so Broadway-wanna-be with its musicals that I feel that there is little chance that I could like this show. And I gave it a fair chance.

The premise boils down to the park manager and his family of four versus a hotel heiress who wants to turn the park into condos. But, everyone got their own storyline, their own quirks, and everything runs separately and concurrently.

The first two episodes are available now. I even drank coffee to watch the second episode so we would be at the same speed. But, that ADHD style of writing is just not for me.

What made the show work though was when I played it in the background. Skipping every other scene, distracted by whatever was on another screen, helped. That way I can cut down the number of concurrent shenanigans that are happening and that made it enjoyable. For me at least.

On the other hand, if you like fast-paced comedy with musical interludes. Yeah, this is for you. To me, it is like a photographer firing burst shots, stopping once in a while to let the camera buffer. Some of the photos may be usable, but I prefer to be methodical.

Cynicism aside, this is only two episodes. To review a show for more than just the knee jerk reaction (without the knee), I’ll need at least five episodes.
