Sometimes you’ve been friends with someone for so long that you forget that they have a talent that you can write about. This month I had a few of those and the most recent case of this was with bassist extraordinaire, Kristopher Chong.
I first met Kristopher Chong almost a decade ago while he was busking at an event at Dataran Merdeka. I don’ remember what it was but he was playing a five-string bass guitar in a way I have never heard it being played before. Like a solo instrument.
Bass guitars has always been an essential component in a band, but it is always in the background. Functioning as a bridge between the drums and the guitar. But the way he played it was alien to me. This was not the strings of a filler instrument. It carried the songs on its own and it was excellent.
I remember taking a video of him playing at the time and posting it on online somewhere. I also remembered that it was not a habit for me to post up videos back then. But that was how we became friends on social media.
