Have you tried buying guilt-free stuff? You know, check the labels to make sure everything about the product is in align with your morale and principles before buying them? I find that it is not an easy or affordable way to shop, but when I can do it, it feels good to know that the purchase that I have made isn’t fuelling the things that I don’t agree with.
This takes us to Apple’s recent press release: Apple commits to be 100% carbon neutral for its supply chain and products by 2030. It’s an interesting read, but it is a long one. So here is the gist of it.
Apple is doing something that a lot of tech companies dare do not dare say, let alone do: Be fully carbon neutral, across the entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and products life cycle by 2030.
The company is already carbon-neutral, but they are making those who work with them, who want to continue to work with them, carbon neutral as well. That is pretty good and they got the plans to do it all laid out.
Apple’s 10-year Climate Roadmap includes low carbon product design, expanding energy efficiency, renewable energy, process and material innovations, and carbon removal. It is comprehensive.
Also, remember that Apple has this $100 million Racial Equity and Justice Initiative that focuses on efforts that address education, economic equality, and criminal justice reform. Which is another big plus.
So, yeah. Apple stuff is not the most affordable, but at least we know that they are using some of the money for good and making their products a more guilt-free purchase.
I’m sure people will find flaws in their execution. It will not be perfect. And personally, after all this, Apple is still not a fully guilt-free option for me. However, what they are doing is admirable, and when it makes an impact, perhaps the world would be better for it.
