Talking Voices Over Coffee

Azman insisted that we meet for the interview, and so we did. We talked about voice acting, of course. Something that I know almost nothing about. And not knowing, in an interview, can be helpful. Because guess what? Chances are, the readers know nothing about it too.

Two things surprised me. First, how he viewed voice acting as a possible profession and second, how there is no ramp-up to becoming a voice actor, here in Malaysia.

From what I gather, it is a close-knit group. They hold workshops, but there are no schools for the skill. Nowhere someone interested in the profession to find guidance or hone their skill. It is all about who you know.

The demand for voice talent is expected to rise. Their skills are needed in animation, advertising, and media in general. Their importance is underestimated. How many times have you skipped a video on YouTube just because the presenter sounded, bad? Just imagine how much a good voice actor can elevate even the plainest video essay.
