When I was a kid, I grew up watching Oprah. I learned about a lot of things watching her show, about rights, equality, and weird things Americans do. I also distinctly remember that she once had the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on her show too. I liked Ninja Turtles, but I remembered nothing about that episode.
Anyway, “The Oprah Conversation” will premiere on Apple TV+ Friday (July 31) and I want to see it. Even though I have to do it on my iPhone since I still haven’t got an Apple TV or one of those Lightning to HDMI cables.
According to the folks at Apple the first episode, which will go live at 7am MYT, will be called “How to Be an Antiracist” and features bestselling author Professor Ibram X. Kendi (who, I am told, is not a Marvel X Star Wars character).
He and Oprah will be talking to white readers who confronted their own racist beliefs.
But it doesn’t end there.
The Oprah Conversation will continue with a special two-part interview with athlete, commentator, activist, and creator and host of “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man,” Emmanuel Acho.
In Part 1, which premiers on August 7, Acho will speak to Oprah about his web series and take questions from white viewers. Part 2 of the interview will see Acho and Oprah dive deeper into their raw, unfiltered discussions about race in response to bold questions from white and LatinX guests.
The series will also offer poignant conversations between Oprah and change-makers such as Equal Justice Initiative founder and bestselling author Bryan Stevenson. A pivotal voice on racism in America, Stevenson’s story and memoir inspired the acclaimed film “Just Mercy.”
That is a lot of very American centric discussions, but that does not mean that there is nothing here for the rest of us to learn from. Racism and inequality are global issues that are as old as humanity itself.
Do you think that this is a part of Apple’s Racial Equity and Justice Initiative? Feels like it is.
“The Oprah Conversation” will premiere alongside “Oprah Talks COVID-19” and “Oprah’s Book Club”.
