Finding Sputnik Rekordz on the third floor of the wet market in TTDI reminded me of the grand wet market in my hometown. The place was just clean enough, just dark enough, just labyrinthian enough to hide secrets and treasures in plain sight.
My appreciation of local music increased when I met Naza. His love for the classics is genuine. Within moments after our interview, he began to spin records with music from the ‘70s and ‘60s that had more talent and passion than most of the music we have today.
It was like talking to an archaeologist who was lamenting about how much we have lost. About how much we have yet to discover, and how much we have chosen to forget.
If you want to discover Malaysian musical as you have never heard of before, follow Naza and his record store’s Instagram account. He periodically posts snip bits of music from his collection of records, played on one of his many record players.
You can follow Naza Mohamad at @nazarethmohd and Sputnik Rekordz at @sputnikrekordz.
