I have never even heard of his name when I first dipped my toes into the designer toy circle. However, in a couple of short years, young artists credited Messy Desk as the person who helped them turn their designs and creations into figures and toys. He has even begun to share his knowledge and teach young artists how to cast their own figures.
This is the story of Gan Chuen Guan. His friends called him Ah Guan, but in the art circles he known Messy Desk.
The interview was done at his home in Kajang. It was a long drive from where I lived. To add to the challenge, all the photographers were busy that day. So, I took all the photos using an iPhone 11 Pro Max. And I think they looked great. Credit goes to the phone and the Moment app.
Anyway, Messy Desk is a modest dude. He got to where he is today because he never gives up trying, never stop learning, and has never said no to sharing what he knows. He still credits BBoyBlackz as the person who taught him everything he knows about casting.
However, it was his own ingenuity and effort that led him to where he is today.
In his home, Messy Desk showcased his past creations, success, and learning experiences. There are no failures here. He told me that he did not grew up with toys and that his path to sculpting simply started from a class he needed to take for the credit.
He shared how he had to learn the hard way to balance what he wants to do versus what people would buy, how he has to teach clients the rules of turning their 2D drawings into 3D sculptures, and at the same time keep his passion alive by feeding it new knowledge and challenges.
You can follow Messy Desk on his Instagram.
Here’s BBoyBlackz’s Instagram as well.
