Review: On the Rocks

The premise of this movie starring Bill Murray, Rashida Jones, and Marlon Wayans is basic. Laura (Rashida) is a mother of two, a writer, and wife of Dean (Marlon). As Dean’s ventures began to show prospect, he spent less time at home. Naturally, Laura suspects that he is cheating on her.

Written by Sofia Coppola, this is a tried and tested plot. But of course, there are some variations to spice things up. Here, Laura’s father’ Felix is a playboy and cheated on her mother, he also is a Mary Sue, and infidelity is made into an endearing trait though “logic”.

Laura is a writer, and as expected of a character who is the surrogate for the writer of the movie, she has writer’s block. Her being suspicious of her husband, which is spurred on by her father, is the most exciting thing she has done.

Even with all that, the movie can only go two ways: good ending or bad ending. It is not smart enough to conjure up a surprise or the unexpected.

Although I don’t want to spoil the movie, there is a scene in the movie that will. It is approximately a third into the movie. You have to know this one story that came out in February to figure this out, and if you do, you know in which direction this movie is going.
