When I put a post on Instagram looking for anyone to interview for a story, Tarmizi took a chance and said: “young talent on tech maybe”. It’s been a while since I last wrote a story about someone in the technology industry. They are many out there, I admit. But, those with a story to tell, or are extrovert enough to tell their story are few and far between.
It turns out this 23-year-old is a software developer and a champion of sponsorware. Sponsorware is a way to make money out of opensource software. As a software developer, you build an open-source application as a base. Companies who are interested in what you’re doing but want it to do more could pay you to add those features, and it grows from there.
Anyway, at the core of this story is that this young man made it as a software developer. And that is a good thing. It is a rare achievement.
We were supposed to have a flood of those. A couple of decades ago private colleges sprouted like wildfires all trying to capitalise on the technology profession craze. But all they manage to produce were IT folks with little practical knowledge because everything that they learned was a couple of years behind the trend.
Thankfully the technology education scene has improved. We see a lot of young talents in the field. Hopefully, there are thriving. Alter all developers are some of the most adept to work from home.
When the story came out, about a month or so after we sat down for the interview, he told me that he has his won company now. His own Sdn Bhd (Private Limited).
