When I asked the folk-rocker Azmyl Yunor if he could recommend someone for me to interview for a feature he pointed me to Fahmi Sani. He was one of Azmyl’s former students at Sunway University. I was impressed, to be recommended for an interview by your own lecturer, he must have made quite an impression.
His story was inspiring. Fahmi wanted to make movies, but for the sake of his parents, he went to architecture school instead. Once he finished his education he worked independently. Until one day, by chance, he discovers a film making program at Sunway University.
His family supported Fahmi in pursuing the dream. And now he is the head of Ninth Floor Pictures, a video production house.
According to him, the name Ninth Floor Pictures came about because that is where their classes were. That is where the Digital Film Production facilities were at their university.
My takeaway from this interview is his confidence in the local movie industry. He sees a lot of potential in it and hidden gems buried amongst all the detritus of bad films.
His goal, the pie in the sky, and non-binding achievement that he wants to obtain are to make 10 movies. 5 local, 5 internationals, and at the same time, win an Oscar for at least one of them. That is when he knows that he has made it. Before promptly pulling up the finishing line and moving it further.
