For Fazli, learning how to market his creations was key to where he is today. Although arts and marketing are two very separate disciplines, when crossed, they result in a potent formula for success. His story is also a lesson for many young and upcoming artist.
Through the journey of making this story, one that is mainly filled with waiting, I learn that I have barely scratched the surface. There is a lot of history behind Kukubesi and the man that founded it.
I am fascinated by his movie poster making process, by his decision to focus on the Malay market, and the larger story of how Fazli got to where he is today. Two-thirds of a page made from an interview done through voice-mail cannot do it justice.
One of Fazli’s requests to me, a week or so after I submitted the story, was if it is possible to refer to him as Fazli Kukubesi in the story. But, it was too late.
The practice of using one’s brand or profession as a sort of a last name, especially among Malays, has always baffled me. The name is not passed down, but I imagined that this was how the Western naming convention came to be. As sons continue their father’s craft, they pick up the same name and so it stuck even though their sons may decide to do something else.
Kukubesi is present in various forms across several digital platforms. It has been confusing to know which is which. So, here are its core Facebook, Instagram, and Shopee pages.
