Review: 1/12 Ultraman Suit Tiga by Bandai Spirits

The thing that fascinates me about these Ultraman Suit kits is the amount of thought that had been put into them to ensure that the finished model looks good and clean. Gates, the extra bits of plastic that connect the part to the runner, is either hidden under parts or on areas where it will be covered when the kit is completed.

That’s no different with the Ultraman Suit Tiga kit. In fact, I think the engineering has improved by a lot. It shows in the finish of the plastic as well. The silver looks brighter when compared to my older Ultraman Suit kits.

The overall look and proportions of the Ultraman Suit Tiga hint that more thought and experience has been put into designing it.

But, one thought keeps popping up in my mind while I was building the kit. I wished it has more details and parts separation. One of the reasons is that the price of the Ultraman Suit Tiga kit, and generally every Ultraman Suit kit with an LED unit, is on par with the most expensive Real Grade kits.

Often referred to as RG, these premium kits put emphasis in realism and in turn engineering, parts separation, and detail.

On the Ultraman Suit Tiga, it felt like they kept stopping halfway. There are parts where the colour separation is completed using stickers, there are many articulated parts but there is no toe curl, and despite all the effort to hide all the gates there are still a few on the silver parts. And these are the parts that benefit the most from hidden gates because they cannot be cleaned up without paint.

If Bandai Spirits omits the LED unit, keep the model at the same price, but used that money to add more details, parts separation, and engineering into the kit. I would totally be okay with that.
