Getting a permit to cross state lines during CMCO is easy

The thing I dreaded the most during the COVID-19 pandemic is the Movement Control Order (MCO), or lockdown. We, in Malaysia, have gone through it twice. And every time we do, I am anxious about not being able to go back to my hometown.

Currently, we are in the second lockdown, a Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO), and I needed a permit to cross state lines.

The procedure is actually easy thanks to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). However, applying for a permit should not be taken lightly. Everyone must help break the COVID-19 chain by following the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) outlined by the National Security Council (MKN).

First, make sure you have a good reason to cross the state line. Ask yourself: Is it an emergency? Is it for business or pleasure? Can the trip be delayed to a later time? Are there alternatives to making the trip?

Second, get the permit application from. You can either download it here or get a copy from the nearest police station. There are special booths where you can get these forms. You can fill it up and apply right at the station. All applications must be approved at a police station.

Third, bring a photocopy of the identification of everyone who is going on the trip (important & MAX 2) and any supporting documents for your trip. The good folks at PDRM are not unreasonable. However, having documents means that your trip is critical enough for the risk of travelling across states.

Fourth, even if you are in such a hurry and forgot to apply for a permit, you can still do so by heading to the nearest police station. It is that easy.

Nevertheless, I must reiterate how important it is to take applying for a permit seriously. It is meant to facilitate ease during these difficult times and should never be abused.
