I wanted to do this story ever since I met the talents that made up the Malaysian pro wrestling industry. The problem was how. In the ring, Gotham is a street smart gangster, a stark contrast to the hardworking and friendly man he is outside the squared circle. I did not want to break that illusion for the fans.
However, a couple of years later, the pro wrestling industry in the country evolved. They need to grow, and to do so, people need to know who the good people behind it all are.
It took us a couple of minutes at the beginning of the interview to agree that we will break kayfabe for this story. It was an easier decision for him than it was for me. We both understood the importance of keeping character. But he understood what is at stake even more.
In the end, I am glad we got to share with the world the story of how pro wrestling saved his life. How the kindness of a single coach could make a difference.
Thanks to Gotham, I got to speak with a pioneer in the Tamil music industry, his mentor in the music industry. But that is another story for another time.
Currently Gotham wrestles for APAC Wrestling, a regional wrestling promotion with regular shows on YouTube.
