Huawei Band 6, now more like the Apple Watch

At RM219, Huawei Band6 is set to be released on April 4 and with the announcement comes a list of features and promotions they hope will entice you to purchase one. What is notable however is how the press release does not specify what smartphone this wrist computer pairs with, the app it uses, or it’s security.

Let’s start with the promotion, with is an RM20 online voucher for unspecified selected products that is valid on the next purchase. How about making the watch a flat RM200 instead?

Anyway, on to the features

1.47in AMOLED display in a tall vertical format with a 194 by 368 resolution. That’s interesting and not bad at all. The only thing that would make it more intriguing and perhaps more comfortable as well is if it had a curved screen.

A 14-day battery life is good for an active wearable but in the same paragraph is says the battery life is actually 10-days if you use it intensely. I thought perhaps the 14-day estimate came from using the sensors sparingly, but it is not. It also says a 5-minute charge gets you 2 days of battery life in lab conditions. Whatever that means.

New hardware with oxygen saturation and heart rate sensor, and a new power saving algorithm. If I have to guess from my experience that means not an always on display and the sensors triggers differently when the wearer is active compared to when it is inactive.

It tracks steps, intensity of activity, standing times, and has 96 workout modes. Standard stuff.

Now it also tracks menstrual cycles “for the ladys’ convenience and for men to take care of their significant other as well”. I am not sure what they mean by that at it is making me stressed and want to take a nap, two more things that the band can track.

There is a reason why one of Apple Watch Series 6 campaign taglines is “it already does that”.

Nevertheless, where the Huawei Band 6 accells is in its price and battery life. And where it needs to explain itself is in the app it uses, the security it offers, and what devices is it compatible with, exactly.
