It’s official, Apple announced the rumoured AirTag, the item finding solution that uses Apple’s Find My network and app. The customisable, precision-etched polished stainless steel, and IP67 water- and dust-resistant AirTag will cost RM149.
Each AirTag has a U1 Chip that enables Precision Finding for iPhone 11 and iPhone 12. This makes finding the tag in a room, building, or location easier. If the item is truly lost, the AirTag can be put into Lost Mode and the user will be notified once it is located by the Find My network. Basically, when another compatible Apple device is nearby.
Apple promises that the AirTag is designed with a set of proactive features that discourage unwanted tracking. Unknown AirTags will alert an iOS user if it has been following them from place to place over time away from its owner. It will make a sound if it is separated from its user for extended periods of time and can be disabled via iPhone or NFC enabled devices.
Third-party developers can make products and accessories that are compatible with the new Find My network accessory program as well.
Speaking of accessories Apple-designed AirTag accessories include the Leather Key Ring in Saddle Brown, (PRODUCT)RED, and Baltic Blue for RM199; the Leather Loop in Saddle Brown and (PRODUCT)RED for RM199; and the Polyurethane Loop in White, Deep Navy, Sunflower, and Electric Orange for RM149. You’ll need one of these to hang or attach the AirTag externally, like to a set of keys like a keychain, or to a bag like a charm or a tag.
Find My is one of the reasons I got my mum an iPhone and Apple watch. Knowing where she is when she goes about her day gives me peace of mind, and she knowing where I am when I am driving home giver her a peace of mind.
AirTag, just made the whole Find My ecosystem more useful than just a way to track family and friends.
