A new Apple TV Remote, colour balancing technology that uses your iPhone, and high frame rate HDR, those are just some of the highlights from the Apple TV 4K announcement. But, why can’t they give it a new name too.
Apple announced that the Apple TV 4K (the new one), is getting high frame rate HDR with Dolby Vision, A12 Bionic chip for enhanced performance and processing, an all-new design, and the Apple TV Remote with intuitive navigation controls. Its starting price, RM849.
It seems that the A12 Bionic chip is at the heart of all the new features listed. It is also responsible for making playback of videos shot on iPhone 12 Pro can be displayed in full 60-fps Dolby Vision on the new Apple TV 4K looks as good as it should be.
The most interesting new feature to me is the innovative colour balance process.
Apple TV uses the light sensor in iPhone to compare the colour balance to the industry-standard specifications used by cinematographers worldwide. Using this data, Apple TV automatically tailors its video output to deliver much more accurate colours and improved contrast — without customers ever having to adjust their television settings.
In addition to the ability to watch those amazing Apple TV+ movies and shows on the big screen, my big reason to want to get a new Apple TV 4K is its ability to be the hub of a Home Kit smart home system.
If you are still on the fence, the new Apple TV 4K can function as a gaming console using Apple Arcade, a music and karaoke centre with Apple Music, play video and audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, and be a fitness centre if Apple Fitness Plus ever arrives in Malaysia.
Apple TV HD with the new Apple TV Remote will be available for RM719.
The new Apple TV Remote will be available separately for RM229, and is compatible with the previous-generation Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD. I am not too impressed by this one, however, I bet I need to get my hands on one to understand it.
