76896 LEGO: Speed Champions Nissan GT-R Nismo: Review

After six years LEGO finally released an Asian car in their Speed Champions line. The 2020 model has 298 pieces and a sticker sheet almost as large as the model itself.

The build process is separated into two bags, a lot for a relatively small model. Most of the parts are used in conjunction with the one piece chassis base to create a solid construct. The finished LEGO model has the heft of a die cast toy car.

Cleaver techniques and creative use of bits made the build a fun process. Some parts kept me guessing as to what I am building. The rear windshield and rear bumper were particularly interesting to build. And those tires, with the break discs and optional rims, that is a nice touch.

Stickers are necessary to complete the car’s look, but of course I wish they were printed. The thing about LEGO stickers is they are cut smaller than the surface that they are meant for. They are meant to be centred and estimating that can be tricky.

I can see why the LEGO Speed Champions series has been around for a while. It is just the right for LEGO and car fans. Fun enough to be a toy and detailed enough to be a display. The price is not bad either at a little under RM100.
