Is Apple TV’s Processor Upgrade Enough?

When Apple announced the new Apple TV 4K, it seems so minor that it didn’t even get a video on YouTube. Instead it only got a post on Apple Newsroom.

As someone living in a country — Malaysia —where some of its features is unavailable (like Siri) or not ubiquitous enough (Home Kit), the news was not exciting either.

Still, the processor upgrade — to an A15 Bionic — is a welcomed one. While I would not call the current Apple TV 4K sluggish, it is clearly not as snappy as Apple’s other devices.

I hope the boost will translate to smoother navigation and improved gaming experience. Some Apple Arcade titles are more fun on the Apple TV, but it’s just not as responsive as it is on an iPad or an iPhone.

Since tvOS16 will not be available until this fall, and Malaysia is not on the list of countries getting Siri on the Apple TV (but Singapore is) , it doesn’t really matter.

What does matter is that the APple TV 4K is available in two configurations: a (RM699) 64GB model with Wi-Fi only, and a (RM799) 128GB model with Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

Although the Wi-Fi only model is good enough, I’d recommend getting the one with Ethernet.

Because the Apple TV is not the centre of my (non-existent) smart home, I consider it a portable device. One that I can take to and plug into the hotel TV and Ethernet to catch up with the shows and movies when I’m away.
