Last week Canon Marketing Malaysia announced the EOS R100, which it said is the smallest, lightest, and most affordable EOS R system. That’s weird because a mirrorless camera’s size, weight and price depend on the lens it has as well.
Because of its price, the EOS R100 has an APS-C sensor. The body weighs approximately 356g with a battery and memory card. Add a kit lens, an RF-S18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM, and the set weighs around 486g.
Despite the price, the camera has a 0.39-in OLED viewfinder with a resolution of approximately 2.36 million dots and a refresh rate of 59.94fps. It also has a standard camera body shape with a grip instead of being flat like a compact. For transferring photos, especially to the phone, the camera has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and is compatible with Canon Camera Connect.
Regarding photo-taking features, the EOS R 100 has autofocusing, Eye and Face Detection, and subject tracking. There’s image stabilisation with a compatible lens, including the kit lens. When desperate, there’s a built-in flash.
For videos, the EOS R100 has a Hybrid Auto mode that takes short videos along with stills when the shutter button is pressed, like Live Photos on an iPhone. It can also take a 4K Timelapse to speed things up or shoot 120fps at 720p to slow things down.
Eye Detection AF and Movie Digital IS are available as well.
In addition to typical controls, the camera also has Creative Assist, a mode that changes the settings’ language from standard to what Canon thinks is “layman’s terms”. Scene modes and Scene Intelligent Auto are the antitheses of manual controls, and there are filters too.
The EOS R100 is compatible with over 30 RF and RF-S lenses. With an EF-EOS R Mount Adapter, it is also compatible with over 80 EF lenses
Canon didn’t say when the camera will be available but listed the price of the EOS R100 at RM2,379 for the body only and RM2,899 with a kit lens.
Only a thorough review of the camera will determine if it’s a deal or if those in the market are better off saving a little bit more to get a better model.
