My Thoughts On Apple’s Soon To Launch 2023 Suite Of Features

Apple’s next feature dump will probably arrive in September. At WWDC in June, Apple listed some of the features we can all expect to see with the release of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, watchOS 10, and tvOS 17. Here’s what I think of them.

Collaborative Playlists: Music has become more and more personal, so the idea of family and friends getting together and crafting a playlist with something for everyone from everyone is a novel idea (at least to me). I imagine it’s helpful sometimes, but it’s not for everyone.

Apple Music Sing with Continuity Camera: The ability to see yourself in a karaoke video is pure novelty. Occasionally fun, and I’ll probably never use it.

Song Credits in Apple Music: Acknowledging the talents behind a song is essential. The more detailed it is, the better. People deserve credit for their work. This could turn Apple Music into a critical, easy-to-reference music information resource.

SharePlay: I wish I had this sooner, back when I actively joined treasure hunts and had road trips to my home town with my friends. This ability to contribute to what’s playing, even without a subscription, could also be helpful in a ride-sharing service.

Apple Music radio shows on Apple Podcasts: Probably to garner a wider audience, this feels less like a feature and more like housekeeping. I like the interviews, though.

Offline Apple Maps: This should have been there from the start. This is likely the result of a deal Apple made with whoever is providing the maps.

Real-time electric vehicle charging availability: I doubt this will be available in Malaysia at launch. There are still a lot of map features that we haven’t got yet. I bet it is helpful, though.

Park trails: Another feature I doubt we’ll see here and in most parts of the world. Great for folks who love the outdoors and hike with their phones. It works well with offline maps, I hope.

Custom Plans in Apple Fitness+: As a fan of Apple Fitness+, this is a needed feature that I didn’t think I’d want. Apple’s fitness system already suggests what to work out via monthly awards, so why not suggest a whole plan?

Fitness+ Stacks: I usually only do one or two Fitness+ workouts in a session, so It’s not for me. Still, I can see how this could be useful for those with more time to work out.

Audio Focus on Fitness+: You know what? I’ve always thought being able to adjust the music and trainer volume separately would be something nice to have. By default, it’s alright, but sometime I’d like the music to be louder.

New Now Playing interface on Apple Podcasts: The ability to better manage the queue is nice, but I usually listen to my podcasts, not looking at the interface, so we’ll have to see how this turns out.

Podcast with episode art: It used to be that a single podcast had a single feed. Now, not only can a single feed have multiple shows, but it can also have multiple seasons. So I feel this is more for the creators than the listeners.

Connect App Store subscriptions with Apple Podcasts: App subscriptions can now include exclusive or ad-free podcasts. I have enough subscriptions, thank you very much.

ID on iPhone and Apple Wallet: It’ll probably not come to most countries. And I’d rather have the ability, natively, to generate contact QR codes or the ability to exchange contacts by tapping phones instead of the ability to verify ID using Apple Wallet.

Find My with Messages and Maps: Currently, this feature is locked down for family only. With this update telling someone where they are, asking someone where they are, and getting the route is more accessible.

Share items using AirTag and Find My: This is great for folks who share a car, luggage, keys, or anything with an AirTag. It’s probably helpful when you also need help finding something with an AirTag.

I’ll probably use the Fitness+ and Maps features the most out of the list. FindMy in certain situations, and probably forget all about the podcast features.
