When it comes to Gunpla, I prefer models with a clean silhouette, and if you’re like me, you’ll love the HG MS-05B Zaku I.
It has just enough detail and accessories to be interesting, and the building process is easy enough not to be a chore. That shield, which doubles as a punch with a stick grenade, is unique.
For a beginner, the Zaku I’s construction poses little challenge. Because of its older design, the kit is an excellent place to practice seam line removal. The ones on the legs and shoulders are satisfyingly straightforward. However, those on the head and arms require some skill to remove. A sanding sponge is highly recommended.
Panel lining on the Zaku I is negligible. The model has a lot of smooth curved lines and few surface details. It could be a good model to practice scribing panel lines on, but I do not want to do so. I like the simple and smooth look.
When it comes to colouring the Zaku I, it is a blank canvas. I find the purple and green colour scheme exciting (compared to most Gundams’ old red, white, blue, and yellow), and I don’t see the need to paint the mono eye instead of using the sticker. Still, I would not mind picking up another kit and painting it in wilder colours.
At under RM40, the HG MS-05B Zaku 1 is better than most Entry Grade kits. It is just as simple to build, gives an authentic Gunpla build experience that’s not simplified, and the result is solid. Sure, it is not the hero character, but more often than not, the side characters and villains have better-looking mobile suits.
