According to Agoda, most Malaysians are looking for places to stay in Kuala Lumpur and Hat Yai during this Lunar New Year.
The Singapore-based folks who run the holiday accommodation search platform said that this was based on searches made from 1 Dec to 25 Dec 2024, with check-ins scheduled from 29 Jan to 2 Feb 2025.
In a press statement on 14 Jan, Agoda said that it had seen an increase of 30% in searches for places to stay in Kuala Lumpur during the Lunar New Year and labelled it the most popular domestic destination.
It also said that most Malaysians looking to travel abroad this Lunar New Year were looking to go to Hat Yai and Bangkok, with a 30% and 76% increase in accommodation searches, respectively.
In third place is Tokyo, with a 78% increase in searches, overtaking Bali.
Agoda also said Malaysia saw a 41% increase in searches by tourists abroad, mostly from Singapore, China, and Indonesia. It highlighted that interest from China grew by 103% and interest from Indonesia grew by 81%.
Keep in mind that these numbers are limited to Agoda users. Also, don’t use these numbers to estimate the least crowded places this Lunar New Year, as most Malaysians would return to their hometowns, where they already have a place to stay during the festive seasons.
