Cash Converters Malaysia is the local version of the Australian company that buys items from people and sells them as second-hand goods.
My first experience with them was about 10 years ago in Selangor. Recently, the company opened a branch in Perak, so I decided to check it out.
They have not changed over the decade or so.
I tried to sell some personal electronics and was welcomed with a wealth of excuses. Sure enough, when I finally got them to actually give me a quote, the price offered was well below expectations and market price. It was so low that it sounded like a joke. On top of that, they wanted receipts.
Based on what I heard while waiting for my turn, others before me did not fare better either. One lady wanted to get rid of her treadmill. She was told that not only would she have to transport her item to the premises, but the amount she was going to get was pitiful.
Since they always lowball their prices, one would expect their selling prices to be bargains. But they were not.
When browsing their wares, I spotted a Battle Cat figure from the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series (the good one) on Netflix in one of their cabinets. I was looking for it to complete my collection, and I know its value.
The figure’s price was no cheaper than its current discounted price at retail.
The other things in the shop look like overstock. Nothing felt like a bargain, and the price tags parodied what could be found elsewhere.
So, I concluded that Cash Converters Malaysia was still not for consumers. They buy low and sell high.
If you are looking to sell or buy second-hand and personal electronics, I recommend Entertainment Exchange instead.
