Jae Ko Designs: born from a mother’s love

It was an accident, laughed Michelle Chu when I asked her about being pregnant with her third child. Her first inspired her to start her own business, her second was born when she was designing a new line for her brand, and I can only imagine what inspiration her third would bring.

For much of the interview, her husband was not in the picture. I imagined him as either a tycoon or a rich recluse. But not a total absent. That was not the impression that I got. Michelle is just very independent.

She studied to become a neuroscientist. However, she has an eye for fashion and her business sense told her that there is a market for stylish diaper bags. To her, there are too many mummy accessories that are overtly made for mums without the chic. So, she set off to change that, alone.

Although she is a successful and independent businesswoman, I got the sense that she misses going out drinking with her friends like she did when she was in Australia. Her marriage and (soon to be) three kids keep her grounded. For now. But, she’ll never complain.

Michelle’s third child is due sometime in April 2021.
