How could I not interview Malaysia’s first KonMari consultant? Although I was not the first, I was grateful for the opportunity. An opportunity that came thanks to a recommendation from someone I have interviewed before. Because I know someone who knows someone.

Rebecca was prepared for the interview the moment she replied to my text. She had answers from her previous interview, materials about what she does, and pictures too. When we sat for the interview, it turned out to be a presentation instead.

From where I was sitting, it felt like that was her comfort zone. It felt like an Apple briefing. Everything was planned and laid out. However, I had to do my job. I had to ask the right questions at the right time and let her tell her story.

I struggled. Separate the product from the person when the person has a PowerPoint presentation all laid out was not easy. I don’t think I succeeded here, but I did come away with lessons that I used in subsequent interviews.

My mom read the story, said it was good and was excited that there were such a thing and the Kon Mari method. She may be biased, but I got her watching the Netflix series, and she loves it. Perhaps she will adopt the method, and we can start reducing our clutters together.

That alone makes this job worth it.
