Apple said Tap to Pay on iPhone is now available in Malaysia, allowing merchants to accept contactless in-person payments with a supported iPhone and iOS app.
Apple said on April 22 that the service lets merchants accept contactless payments from credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets by using an iPhone and a partner-enabled iOS app.
Apple said merchants can use the feature on an iPhone 11 or later running the latest version of iOS. The company said customers complete payment by holding a contactless card, iPhone, Apple Watch, or other digital wallet near the merchant’s iPhone, and that the transaction uses NFC technology.
Apple said no extra payment terminal or hardware is required. The company said the feature is intended for businesses of different sizes, including small vendors and larger retailers.
Apple said ADAPTIS, Fiuu, HitPay, Stripe, and Zoho are the first payment platforms in Malaysia to offer the feature to their merchants. The company said Tap to Pay on iPhone will also be available soon at checkout at Apple The Exchange TRX.
Apple said the feature supports Apple Pay, other digital wallets, and contactless credit and debit cards from “American Express,” “JCB,” “Mastercard,” “MyDebit,” “UnionPay,” and “Visa” in Malaysia.
Apple said payment data is protected by the same technology used in Apple Pay. The company said transactions are encrypted and processed through the “Secure Element,” and that Apple does not know what is being purchased or who is making the purchase. Apple also said it does not store card numbers or transaction information on the device or on its servers.
Apple said some contactless cards may not be accepted and that transaction limits may apply. The company also said encrypted card numbers are stored temporarily on iPhone only for transactions made in “Store and Forward” mode.
