PROTON expands its Tanjung Malim, Perak powertrain hub in June 2026.
The Tanjung Malim plant began operating in 2022 and evolved from engine assembly to a powertrain hub producing ICE, HEV, PHEV and EV engines, transmissions and electric drive units. It supplied current and future PROTON models and selected Geely programmes for international markets.
The facility sat within the Automotive High-Tech Valley and had a design capacity of up to 240,000 engines annually. PROTON invested more than RM121 million to expand production of engines, transmissions and electrified powertrain components. The plant worked with 16 suppliers, half of them Malaysian.
The plant employed more than 500 personnel with an average age of 35 years and used collaborative robots and AI-based inspection systems to raise automation. Over 50 Malaysian employees completed training programmes in China. PROTON said these efforts supported localisation, talent development and technology transfer.
Components from Tanjung Malim were supplied for Geely vehicles sold in Vietnam, Mexico and South Africa. PROTON planned to increase engine production capacity to up to 400,000 units annually by 2028.
