Proton Commences Local Production of Hybrid Components in Malaysia

Proton begins local production of dedicated hybrid transmissions and electric drive units in Tanjung Malim, Malaysia, following a MITI delegation visit on August 3, 2026.

Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani officiated the start of production at Proton’s Powertrain Plant. The move made Proton the first automotive manufacturer in Malaysia to locally produce both component types for electrified vehicles.

The manufacturing milestone increased domestic supply participation for the locally produced Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV model. Eight of the 16 suppliers supporting the RM121 million facility are local Malaysian companies.

Johari stated that Proton currently employs approximately 9,700 workers and produces over 150,000 vehicles annually. Proton Deputy Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa noted the company continues investing in engineering capability and supplier development.
