Google, YouTube Launch Malaysia Digital Safety initiative

Google and YouTube announced a family digital safety initiative in Malaysia on May 9, and reported survey findings on parents’ online concerns.

Google and YouTube said the programme, called Bijak Digital Bersama Google dan YouTube, aims to help Malaysian families navigate digital services. Google reported that 67% of parents felt confident in guiding their children with AI.

Google reported that 56.8% of parents cited online safety and privacy as their top concern. It stated that 38.9% felt confident protecting a child’s personal data online.

Google reported that 54.5% of parents were concerned about their children’s exposure to content. It stated that 86.1% believed children faced misinformation or harmful content.

Google reported that 52.7% of parents struggled to manage screen time. It stated that 21% used remote locking features.

Google stated that 54% of parents relied on active monitoring. Ben King, Google Malaysia country managing director, said families needed tools, knowledge, and conversations.

Google and YouTube said they offered tools including SafeSearch, YouTube Kids, supervised YouTube experiences and Family Link. They stated that YouTube also offered Bedtime, Take a Break, and Shorts time controls.

Google stated that Be Internet Awesome supported digital literacy for parents and children. It said the survey was commissioned through YouGov.
