National carmaker Proton plans to expand its New Energy Vehicle plant in Tanjong Malim, it said on 29 May 2026.
Proton said it would invest RM37 million to increase annual capacity at the Automotive High-Tech Valley NEV plant to 42,000 vehicles from 20,000 less than a year after operations began.
The plant in Tanjong Malim, built with an RM82 million investment plan and inaugurated by Malaysia’s prime minister, used advanced robotics and cloud-based production systems to assemble multiple models.
Proton reported 8,472 deliveries of the e.MAS 5 in the first four months of 2026, calling it Malaysia’s best-selling EV, and 11,617 total NEV sales, including the e.MAS 7 and e.MAS 7 PHEV.
The company said local assembly of the e.MAS 5 would start at Tanjong Malim to join the e.MAS 7.
